I am a fully qualified and insured Play and Creative Arts Therapist and am a member of a regulatory body. During a session I would use tools such as paints, chalks, sand, toys and clay to allow my client to explore feelings or emotions that they might have trouble speaking openly about. Often this approach is useful in helping to reach the underlying cause of difficulties, particularly if they are routed in a traumatic past event. This service is suitable for all ages and that includes adults. Information on the history of this type of therapy and how it works can be found on the BAPT (British Association of Play Therapists) website. Sessions are taken at the clients own pace and there is no pressure to talk, simply the act of working through feelings creatively can be helpful and can often then lead on to feeling able to discuss things later, Others like to talk while they paint or use sand. It really varies from client to client, The most important thing is that you have a safe space that you feel comfortable in and that their is a trusting therapeutic relationship.I work in Glasgow and surrounding areas - private sessions are carried out in private room that I would hire for the session, there can be some negotiation as to where our sessions would be held. I often use buildings that have a waiting area for parents/carers to remain in the building. An initial block of sessions would usually be 12 weeks long and for some this is enough but the decision can also be made to carry on for longer - it really depends on each individual client. I would always advise that you also have support of a GP or other medical professional to look after any physical symptoms you may have.
Clients can self refer - either via email or by phoning.Children and young people require parent/guardian permission. We would then meet to take some background information and complete some assessment forms so as we can track progress together.Â
