Mala Watts

I am a registered dietitian with over 20 years experience with children and young people with eating disorders. I am trained in family based treatment (FBT). I use FBT skills alongside dietetic skills to support weight restoration and/or establish regular eating when disordered eating is a problem. I support young people as well as parents in what is often stressful circumstances. I am very familiar with vegetarianism and veganism.

When realizing our daughter had an eating disorder our world was turned upside down. Grace has always been a lovely, funny, happy young lady and the speed at which this illness took hold was extremely scary. We were introduced to Mala by recommendation and from the initial phone call I knew we could work with her and that Grace would be receptive to her advice. Mala has always been very calm and considerate of us as a whole family, taking into account just how hard this is for ALL of us not just Grace. Mala has empowered us to get Grace back on the right track and made us feel confident that we can help Grace and we are doing a good job. I would highly recommend Mala . Without Mala we would not be where we are now. So Mala THANKYOU. February 2022

Mum (name withheld by Mala for confidentiality) Before I met Mala and started getting help from her I didn't see a way out of this, I thought that I would be living the rest of my life like this, since meeting Mala and having weekly meeting's with her I can now finally see that I can get better and go back to doing the things I enjoy. Mala hasn't only helped me massively she has also helped my mum and dad and given them the support that they need. I would strongly recommend Mala, as without the help and support that I have had from her I wouldn't be where I am now. Grace.

I have over 20 years' experience as a Specialist Paediatric Eating Disorder dietitian, working with children and young people with eating disorders and disordered eating/ eating difficulties.

My strengths include my extensive skills working with parents to support their child with weight restoration. I have more than 6 years' experience offering Family Based Treatment (FBT). FBT has the strongest evidence for the management of eating disorders.

I have experience working with young people who have ASD, ADHD and anxiety. I have some personal experience as a parent negotiating the SEN system over many years. This experience I believe has been invaluable in truly understanding the day-to-day challenges parents face when one child has particular needs. I am therefore able to tailor my advice and support parents through challenging times. I am also very familiar with vegetarian and vegan diets.

I have a keen interest in sports nutrition which compliments my work with eating disorders/disordered eating patients and those with eating difficulties, as exercise can be a key feature.

I am also developing my skills in ARFID (avoidant restrictive food intake disorder), having attended ARFID training during 2021 with Dr Rachel Bryant-Waugh and also British Dietetic Association (BDA) endorsed training from Winchester University. I am part of a small group of dietitians writing a document entitled 'The role of the dietitian in the assessment and treatment of children and young people with ARFID: what you need to know when developing services'. This document is written on behalf of the BDA, to make it more likely that dietetics is adequately funded as ARFID services are gradually being developed throughout the country. I have helped organise a number of ARFID study days/sessions for dietitians across the UK during 2021/22.
