Highland Eating Disorder Service

We are an outpatient department and although based in Inverness we cover the whole of The Highland Region. Our team include a Consultant Psychiatrist, Medical Psychotherapist, Nurse Therapists, Dietitian and Admin Support. The team are qualified and experienced in the main therapies helpful in treating eating disorders. When a client is referred to our Service they will be invited to attend for an assessment where they will meet a member of our team to talk over their needs and to discuss treatment options. They will be allocated a key worker. If clients decide to attend for therapy they will usually be offered weekly sessions. Patients travelling long distances may be offered appointments via video-conferencing facilities after a first initial appointments in person. Clients will be involved with their therapist in setting goals. Clients will learn skills to give them confidence and to help their treatment and recovery.

Referral Criteria & Process

We accept referrals for clients with Anorexia Nervosa, Atypical Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa and Atypical Bulimia Nervosa and Binge Eating Disorder. To risk assess and determine urgency, we need an up-to-date BMI, with baseline bloods, U’s & E’s, LFT’s, Ca, MG, Phos, CRP, GLc, FBC. If a patient is vomiting, electrolytes are a particular concern. If BMI is below 15 or there are electrolyte imbalances, then an ECG is also important. We also need to know if there has been rapid weight loss of >1kg/week for 4+ weeks.
