Eating Disorder Service (EDS) is a charity (based in the Barbican area of Plymouth), established back in 1995, funded by several local health commissioning groups, to support those with a recognisable eating disorder. We are primarily a short to medium-termed psychotherapy service offering individuals age 18+, specialist dietetic guidance/support in addition to individual therapy sessions. When appropriate, we also provide some specific group input to those who would benefit from this type of help. We accept professional as well as self referrals in writing, via phone, emails or fax. Potential clients need to be registered with a GP within the above geographical areas. If there are any queries regarding the diagnosis of an eating disorder, we are happy to discuss/clarify them over the phone.
Referral are accepted from the individaul, GP's, health care professionals. In order to process the referral, we would need the individual’s full name, date of birth, if attended previously (when), GP name and address, other health services/agencies involved and any relevant information that may help to support the referral. On receipt of the above, EDS will send out a referral pack which contains some service/therapy information, initial assessment forms for the client to complete and return. As soon as we receive the completed forms, an assessment appointment would be arranged to meet with the clients to discuss their situation/problems in more detail. No decision is made at the meeting but the team discusses all assessed referrals monthly (as soon as possible if the clients are at risk), a care package is then proposed based on clients’ problems/needs. A letter will then be sent to the client, referrer (if any) and their GP outlining the proposal. If the referral is deemed to be inappropriate for our service, EDS will endeavour to make recommendations of support/services suitable to support the individual.
EDS comprises of a small team of experienced therapists who are all trained in various forms of NICE (National Institutte of Clinical Excellence) recommended therapies for the treatment/support of an eating disorder. We work very closely with local NHS community-based medical and mental health services to provide a safe package of care for our clients.
